Basic Rulings of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr – A Comprehensive Guide (Hanafi & Shafi’i Fiqh)
Zakat Nisab Calculation
- Who is Obligated to Pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr?
- Hanafi School: It is obligatory for every free Muslim who is a sahib-e-nisab, i.e., possesses wealth equivalent to 612 grams of silver, exceeding their essential needs (e.g., housing, clothing, food).
- Shafa’i School: It is obligatory for every Muslim who, on the day and night of Eid, has wealth beyond their basic needs, even if it does not reach the Zakat nisab threshold.
- Common Point: The head of the household must pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr on behalf of dependents (e.g., spouse, minor children).
- Quantity and Method of Payment for Sadaqat-ul-Fitr
- Hanafi School:
- Wheat or its flour: Half Sa’a (approximately 1.59 kg)
- Barley, dates, or raisins: One Sa’a (approximately 3.184 kg)
- Payment in monetary value is permissible, typically based on the price of wheat.
- Shafa’i School:
- One Sa’a (approximately 2.400 kg) of the region’s staple food (e.g., rice, wheat) must be given.
- Payment in monetary value is not permissible; the actual food item must be provided.
- Hanafi School:
- Timing of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr Payment
- Hanafi School:
- Preferred Time: Before the Eid prayer.
- It may be paid from the start of Ramadan, though delaying it beyond Eid is discouraged.
- Shafa’i School:
- Preferred Time: On the morning of Eid, after Fajr but before the Eid prayer.
- Payment before Ramadan is not permissible; if paid after the Eid prayer, it counts as regular charity, and the obligation of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr remains unfulfilled.
- Common Point: Both schools prioritize payment before Eid to ensure timely benefit to the recipients.
- Hanafi School:
- Eligible Recipients of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr
- Both Schools Agree:
- Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is given to those eligible for Zakat, such as the poor, needy, and destitute.
- It may be given to close relatives (e.g., siblings) if they are eligible.
- It cannot be given to parents, spouse, or children, as their support is already an obligation.
- Both Schools Agree:
- Importance of Intention
- Both Schools Agree:
- An intention is mandatory when paying Sadaqat-ul-Fitr, whether expressed verbally or held in the heart.
- Without intention, the payment is not valid.
- Both Schools Agree:
- Key Jurisprudential Points and Practical Advice
- Hanafi School: Paying in monetary value is permissible and considered a convenient method in modern times.
- Shafa’i School: Adhering to payment in food aligns more closely with the Sunnah.
- Practical Advice:
- Hanafi followers should consult local scholars to determine the price of wheat and pay the per-person amount in rupees.
- Shafa’i followers should distribute one Sa’a of the local staple food (e.g., rice) to eligible recipients.
- Avoid delays in delivering Sadaqat-ul-Fitr to ensure recipients can prepare for Eid.
